Survival Guide

A list of items to bring with you

  • A lightweight, comfortable rucksack
  • A FULLY CHARGED mobile phone with sufficient credit, ensure the organisers are aware of its number
  • Waterproof lightweight jacket and trousers - shorts are not recommended due to stinging nettles
  • An effective brimmed hat
  • High PF sunscreen or suntan lotion (yes, it may be sunny!!!)
  • A large bottle of water
  • High carbohydrate and protein food
  • A pair of sunglasses
  • A lightweight jumper (depending on weather)
  • A stout stick or hiking poles (optional)
  • A Map(s) and/or set of Route Notes - If you have a smartphone it may have both map and location services applications to assist too
  • A Compass for the ultras amongst you
  • An extra pair of socks, especially if doing the full 27 miles
  • A very basic First Aid kit for blisters and anything else that you think might afflict you on the 5th September; it is a good year for wasps... It is a good idea to use a blister stick on your feet before starting
  • Ensure that your footwear is up to the job, i.e. properly broken in walking shoes/boots with plenty of tread and support and use hiking socks with a seamless inner section
  • Make sure that you apply Vaseline to those sensitive areas
  • Make sure that you understand the notes given to you - if you find yourself lost go back to where you were and wait for others to join you
  • There will be some event markers but not every few yards
  • If you find yourself lost and need help, call on of the I.C.E. number stating a rough location or landmark sighting to aid us in redirecting you
  • When you arrive at the watering station at Barons BMW, always ask yourself whether you can easily make it round the circuit - it’s much easier to pick you up from there than down an isolated footpath
  • In all cases be honest with yourself and be prepared to downgrade your expectations
  • Do not leave a support station AND ESPECIALLY DO NOT LEAVE THE FINISH IN THE TOWN HALL without ensuring that the organisers know that you have safely arrived.  Be accountable for your progress
  • Make sure that you walk at an all day pace, there is no rush
  • Be aware that the footpath may go through fields that may contain farm animals with their young so keep any dog with you on a lead  and cross over to an adjoining field to minimise the risk
  • Take nothing but memories and leave nothing but footprints and be aware of adders in some locations
  • PLEASE HELP US TO HELP YOU BY CHECKING IN AT OUR WAYSTATION AT BARONS BMW IN HINDHEAD AND ALSO AT THE FINISH.  We need you to let us know when you’ve been past each point, so that we will know swiftly if anyone has gone missing and roughly where and we can close down the stations and stand down our volunteer marshals once everyone has been checked off
